What a great way to promote our libraries. The study reports that all public libraries provide public access to computers and the Internet. More than 87% of libraries provide technology training, and more than 2/3 offer access to e-books. Unfortunately the study also points out an increased demand for library technology resources but a decreased funding at state and local levels. Here's a slideshow that highlights some of the findings. At the State Library we've responded by creating an "e-reader" petting zoo. Several master trainers and State Library staff have been trained and are available to visit NC libraries to give staff the opportunity to handle the different e-readers and learn some of the pros and cons of each. Just another way our libraries prove their value!

Community Connections

Recently I attended the North Carolina Public Library Directors annual awards banquet which I love because it's a great place to witness the creativity of North Carolina's library staff. This year I was impressed with Robeson County Public Library's award winning program Polar Express Comes to Life. The library joined with the city to present a wonderful holiday program centering around the Polar Express movie. The library's, new Teen Theatre group, wrote a script, made costumes and props and presented a production at the community's film presentation of the Polar Express. This was a wonderful partnership between the county and the library highlighting the talented teens from the Teen Theatre Program. And this wasn't just a one time event - the teens travel around the county putting on plays at each of the county's libraries for children during their regular storytime.

Upcoming Marketing Workshop

CHECK IT OUT

The NCLA/Public Library section has developed a great workshop on Maximizing your Marketing with Minimal Costs. You know on facebook and other sites they often have a "like" button or comment. Wouldn't it be great if we had these on our library websites and encouraged folks to click on the like button and post some comments. How great - we could then use those comments to tell our story AND we could ask those folks to tell their friends!

Campaign Kick Off a Big Success

Last week was the statewide Smartest Card Campaign kick off - what a success. The Randolph County Public Library hosted the event and organized an "open mike", featuring our campaign spokesperson, Cathy Smith Bowers, and several local poets. What an excellent partnership between the library and its' community. Cathy entertained the audience with stories about her childhood which gave insight into her poem that she shared, entitled "Namesake." Members from the local writers network shared their work and local resident Phil Shore closed the evening with a reading of his poem about the library card. You can view Phil's reading at

http://www.youtube.com/user/statelibrarync

Also check out some great pictures of the event http://www.flickr.com/photos/asheborolibrary/sets/72157624915422124/show/

In addition we had a webinar to share great ideas on promoting your smartest card campaign. Salute to all of our public libraries for their participation in our statewide campaign. As in previous years we have a state spokesperson - Cathy Smith Bowers - North Carolina's poet laureate. Cathy has recorded a podcast, and we've created a spokesperson poster and news release. Our kick off will be on September 8th at the Randolph Public library at an "open mike" night.
Check out all the resources we have available.
Download the poster or podcast
Or if you'd like to read about great ideas that our libraries have done in previous years check out the marketing toolkit section -"strategies p.4".

Advocacy in Many Formats

Advocacy is always a hot topic for libraries. As the virtual world evolves there are so many ways we can expand our reach and education. Recently the New York Public Library had a video produced by Improv Everywhere as part of the library's "Don't close the book on libraries." What a fun way to spread the word.

http://

I've recently been working on some advocacy issues and often refer to PLA's toolkit - Libraries Prosper with Passion, Purpose and Persuasion! If you haven't had the opportunity to use this toolkit - it's great. I rode the bus with about 30 other folks from NC - including trustees, friends members, and other library staff, including our State Librarian Mary Boone - pictured here. Appointments were made prior to our arrival with our NC elected officials and we spent Tuesday afternoon travelling the halls of the senate and house. Along with a group of other librarians, friends and trustees I met with four elected officials. Each one spent personal time with us and was clearly engaged and interested in our library world. Bob Etheridge particularly appreciated our handouts and mentioned the importance of having "numbers to back up our stories." A great tool for that is the new updated wallet-sized, folded brochures called Quotable Facts About America's Libraries.

One quotable fact I found fascinating: " Amercans go to school, public and academic libraries nearly 3 times more than they go to the movies." So check it out and get some quotable facts today to share with friends, trustees and staff. Encourage everyone to choose their favorite and share it often.

A Gold Mine - WebJunction NC

If you haven't take the time to explore WebJunction NC you're missing out on a real gold mine. One handout which impressed many legislators was the recently ALA published report - How Libraries Stack Up. I've attached the link so that you can adopt it for your community and share with your funders.
http://www.oclc.org/reports/pdfs/214109usf_how_libraries_stack_up.pdf

Telling Your Story

During these challenging times we hear how important it is to tell our story. We've been working on this for quite some time - using the advocacy toolkit by PLA; holding workshops and developing key stories. Recently one of our consultants compiled some key stats for our public libraries and used those stats to capture some interesting thoughts. I wanted to share some of them with you and encourage you to think of ways you could do this for your library.

North Carolinians visited public libraries 44 million times last year, which is equivalent to filling the Dean Dome 2,023 times, the RBC Center 2,231 times, or Carter Finley Stadium 733 times.

There were almost 5 times as many visitors to North Carolina's public libraries (44.1 million) than visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (9.2 million --the most visited national park in the coutnry.)

Fifteen times more people attended library programs than the record attendance at an ACC Men's Basketball Tournament.

So what community comparisons can you make in regards to your library services?

It's all in the name

Someone recently shared this website which I found responds to many questions we often address. The site is intended to help library web developers decide how to label key resources and services in such a way that most users can understand them well enough to make productive choices. It compiles usability test data evaluating terminology on library websites, and suggests test methods and best practices for reducing cognitive barriers caused by terminology. I think this is very applicable to building design and signage also. The usability studies were fascinating. Looking at terms we often take for granted and how little they are understood by the public. It offers some great alternatives. check it out.
Library Terms that Users Understand: http://www.jkup.net/terms.html

Verification of What We Know to Be True

ALA released their 2010 State of America's Libraries report this week. No surprises, but I thought some of the findings might be useful. Yes we all know libraries are busier than ever with less staff and less funding. But what was interesting was the amount of supportive data pointing to the importance of our libraries during the economic hard times.
"The report shows the value of libaries in helping Americans combat the recession. It includes data from a January 2010 Harris Interactive Poll that provides compelling evidence that a decade-long trend of increasing library use is continuing- and even accelerating during economic hard times. More than 223 million Americans feel thatt because it provides free access to materials and resources, the public library plays an important role in giving everyone a chance to succeed. So check out the report - maybe you can use some of the stats as a comparison to your library. Your local newspaper might be interested! An overview of my thoughts: Before we can improve our marketing efforts we must understand our audience. Many Hispanic cultures view libraries very differently. There are several misconceptions that affect how Latinos use the library. In my presentation I share these six misconceptions.
1. Libraries are for the educated.
2. The English term for library is confusing.
3. Libraries cost money, you have to pay for service.
4. There is a huge fear that libraries will pass on Personal information to governmental agencies.
5. Libraries have only English books.
6. Library use only -materials cannot leave the library.

Taking this and some of the cultural differences into consideration we can carefully plan our marketing efforts to the Hispanic community.

Tips On Preparing Marketing Materials

Emphasize the visual. Use color.

Emphasize the 4 F's - Free, Family, Food, Fun

Use their language

Get it down to basics

Get help reviewing translations

Much more information can be found on library services for the Hispanic/Latino populations in the Spanish outreach section at WebJunction. The attached poster was done by the Moline Public Library and does an excellent job demonstrating the marketing tips.

Money Saving Ideas at WomansDay.com - How Public Libraries Can Save You Money

Money Saving Ideas at WomansDay.com - How Public Libraries Can Save You Money

Posted using ShareThis

Thought you might be interested in the recent article in Woman's Day magazine. I'll admit sometimes it's frustrating to find the time for social networking, but "The Social Pulpit" - how Obama used social media in his campaign is really inspiring. I really liked the way they combine social media with targeting audiences to get their message across. The spheres of cross-influence is a great public engagement model. So if you get a chance take a look at this, there are definitely some applications that would work in your library.

Electronic or Print?

Recently there were several examples on PR talk about annual reports. And the discussion centered on struggling with the issues of do we use print or electronic format. Personally I like the idea of using both. One can get great coverage with an electronic newsletter, but it's often nice to have some print copies. During my public library years, when I did a lot of speaking to community clubs it was always nice to have an annual report or some summary sheet to actually hand to participants. Check out these great examples, if you have others to share let me know and I'd be happy to post.

http://www.metrolibrary.org/annualreport

http://www.plcmc.org/About_Us/Insights_2009_fall.pdf

Summer Reading Promotion Sparks Interest of Local Businesses

Each December the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association hosts an awards presentation at their annual banquet recognizing both libraries and individuals. Libraries receive awards for programming, promotions, service, staff development and new or improved facilities. I attended this year's banquet and was so impressed with the many creative ideas. Thought I'd highlight one which can easily be replicated and is such a great way to involve the business community in your library.

The staff at Mauney Memorial Library was looking for ways to involve downtown businesses and demonstrate the amount of foot traffic library activities can generate. Their concept is simple, easy to replicate and inexpensive. For their summer reading program downtown partners were selected and agreed to host the mascot for one week during the six weeks of the summer reading program. The library mascot, Bobbie the Butterfly, was positioned at a different business each week. Each week a new riddle was posted in the library. The riddle is solved by identifying the business that Bobbie was visiting. When children, moms and dads visit the business they are awarded a reading buck. The reading buck can be spent at the Summer Reading Store at the library.

The program increased door traffic for each business partner and was an easy way for the library to demonstrate their community involvement. This can be easily replicated in libraries and communities of all sizes.

Holidays at Your Library

A busy time for all, but it might be a good time to try a few creative things in your library to entice new customers. She was sharing some of their policies on customer service. I found it very interesting to hear how they focus on "touchpoints" - touching each customer. No not physically, but making a connection with everyone who comes in their store. Employees are assigned certain areas of the store and when someone is in their section they make sure to make a connection. I was thinking how effective that could be in our libraries. I picture staff having certain areas and roaming, connecting with customers in their area. I'm sure many do this and if you do I'd love to hear about it. I remember while at ALA a few years ago and we visited libraries that had pods instead of large reference desks. The pod allowed the customer and staff to work together in close proximity.

Swap and Chat at NCLA

Swap and Chat was great fun at NCLA. Today was a busy day - starting out with our morning session with Keith Michael Fiels, ALA Executive Director. Keith shared his thoughts about the future of libraries. I loved his comment," if we predict the future we can create the future." So let's make positive predictions! And of course what I liked was his focus on the importance of increasing public awareness for libraries. Following along the same lines, David Singleton, Director of Customer Experience at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, spoke in the afternoon about the challenging times facing our libraries, emphasing the importance of communication not only to our customers, but also our staff. David shared the following quote, "during challenging times, make asset scarcity a source of innovation, not enervation." by John Ulmschneider.
Tomorrow I plan to continue collecting video clips of great pr ideas from out participants at the Swap and Chat - so watch for more postings.

Dewey or Do We Not?

I just returned from the Association of Rural and Small Libraries Annual Conference (www.arsl.info) in Gatlinburg. Gatlinburg's new library, the Anna Porter Public Library, is a beautiful building on the outskirts of town and is the pride of all residents. Kenton Temple, Director, hosted a preconference and shared the Gatlinburg Story. It was fascinating how they involved the community to raise funds to build this new library. Another interesting fact is that their library arranges their nonfiction like a bookstore - not by dewey numbers. They still use the dewey classification, but the nonfiction is arranged by topic - ie: health, money matter, self help, etc. It's an interesting concept and one that is working very well for them - the community loves it! Included in their catalog is an extra column that lists the location of the book by topic.

Check out the library's website for more information. http://www.annaporterpl.org/

Promotional Video

I was thinking about our new category in the Best of Show this year - videos. It was a fictional interview. The names of the library, its director, the issues involved, and the project are real and accurate, but the interview itself never actually happened. Steve actually wrote the questions and the answers as a way to highlight and explain the Catawba Library renovation experience. This could be a great way to highlight a new service or program at your library. In North Carolina I've seen some wonderful formats and presentations. I remember Greensboro public library's a few years ago developed notepads with a fact about the library on each note pad sheet. Cumberland County had plastic bags with library information printed on the outside. I came across this idea which I think is fantastic and very innovative. The Columbus Library presented their 2008 annual report in a very unique way. Check it out.
http://ourstory.columbuslibrary.org/

Promoting Your Library - Free & Easy Tips

With staff shortages and increased demands from library customers I've heard many library staff say, "we just don't have time to promote our library." In order to get a better handle on consumer feedback, Starbucks used social media to start "My Starbucks Idea." The site allows users to submit suggestions to be voted on by Starbucks consumers, and the most poular suggestions are highlighted and reviewed. Starbucks then added an "ideas and action" blog that gives updates to consumers on the status of changes suggested. Wouldn't this be a great thing for our libraries. Ask users for suggestions for the library and then share with them how we responded. Academic and community colleges could put it up on the student pages, public libraries could post it on their website. I love the fact that they follow up with the updates for consumers. How often do we forget to tell our customers what we are doing in response to their requests?

check out the "Starbucks Idea" at http://mystarbucksidea.force.com/ideaHome

Surge in Library Usage

Katie Couric on the surge on library usage.
Watch CBS Videos Online

Teens Involved

Thought you might enjoy this creative way to attract teens to the library. The Bethlehem Public Library is hosting their second annual teen film fest. I looked at some of the entries from last year - some very creative projects. The one to the right is called "Wait Room". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8Oc2dZKp5k What a great way to attract teens to your library. At Bethlehem Public Library their contest is for teens in grades 6-12 to enter their original video productions for prizes. The categories are...! action, animation, comedy, documentary, promotional, short, and technical/experimental. Check out their guidelines at http://www.bethlehempubliclibrary.org/pdfs/filmfest_guidelines_2009.pdf

Economic Challenges - ALA Compiles Great Information

The economy - that's the topic of conversation everywhere. I've had several people ask about how to educate their communities on the library's importance during these hard economic times. There have been discussions on using the value calculator, telling the library story and marketing the library staff. All good topics for discussion. ALA has done a wonderful job pulling a lot of this information together in a web site: www.ala.org/economynews.
Hope this helps. If you've done some work on this at your library, please feel free to share your comments on the blog.

Did you know that 68% of Americans have library cards. That's the greatest amount since ALA started measuring in 1990?

Driving Traffic to Your Web Site

I just read a great article "How to Drive Traffic to Your Website, by Aaron Schmidt and Sarah Houghton-Jan, in Marketing Library Services. The authors start with a great premise, "if you are not offering relevant services or interesting content on your site, there's really nothing to promote." So true! The article stresses two key tips; join the community conversations and list your site where people are searching. Reading the article I had several ah ah moments. The article provides numerous web sites, one was a listing of free wireless network directories. What a great way to drive traffic to your library - make sure folks know you have a free wireless network. So check out the article at http://www.infotoday.com/MLS/nov08/Schmidt_Houghton-Jan.shtml

Brochures and More

I was doing some reading over the Thanksgiving holiday and came across an interesting article on designing brochures. Thought with the new year right around the corner, folks might be thinking about creating some new publicity materials. I loved the fact that the article stressed the importance of "gearing the language in the brochure to the customer." I think often we flip to our "library lingo" mode and don't focus on communicating with the customer.
Check it out at http://www.hbgraphics.com/articles/design_broch.htm

Turning the Page - Gates Advocacy Conference

Recently I was fortunate to attend the Turning the Page Conference sponsored by the Gates Foundation and PLA. The conference provided training, information, and tools to help build participant's skills and confidence in advocating for their libraries. You can find more details at www.SustainingLibraries.org. There were many great ideas shared, but one I thought might be useful was what I call the "postcard idea." Libraries talked about how after a library program they handed to participants a postcard, with the phrase, "what I learned at my library today" , these were collected and used to promote other programs. What a wonderful simple tool, but one I could see you might use in various ways. Leslie Perry Memorial hosted a wonderful event for their Smartest Card Campaign kick off - Discover Night. You could feel the excitement as you walked into the grand hallway outside the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library entrance. Posters that featured members of Perry Library’s community of readers were the main attraction. (sample to the left) The colorful display was eye catching and the individual’s quotes demonstrated the importance of the library to the community of readers. Cornell Manning, trustee, sees the library as “the temple of learning.” Teacher David Cooper, shared his thoughts, “a library is a place learn about your history, establish your present status, and prepare for your future aspirations.”
Library Director, Jeanne Fox, and her staff organized the Discover Night @ Perry Library to kick off the smartest card campaign and encourage the public to discover the value of a library card. In addition to viewing the posters participants had the opportunity to learn about library resources, enjoy face painting, view special book displays, fill out the library community survey, register for prizes, enjoy refreshments and entertainment as well as meet Trustees and staff.
Jim and Yancey Hines donated their photography services and the posters will remain on display in the library. Many local businesses provided prizes for those who attended and for drawings at the end of the month for those who got cards during the month of September. Every child who registered for a new card received a book to keep.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nclibrarymarketing.blogspot.com/2008/10/h-leslie-perry-memorial-library-kicks.html' title='H. Get it. Use it.

September is right around the corner and I hope all of our public libraries are gearing up for the Smartest Card campaign. We are very fortunate to have Branford Marsalis as our state spokesperson this year. Branford will be doing a press conference on Sept. 2 in Durham.
There are some great program ideas in this toolkit. Several libraries are hosting kick-off events that include guest speakers, community partners and entertainment. The Randolph County Library is tying their campaign to their Community Reads. Throughout the month I'll be posting great ideas - so remember pass them along.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nclibrarymarketing.blogspot.com/2008/08/smartest-card-get-it-use-it.html' title='Smartest Card. Chris Brogan wrote a piece titled, "50Ways Marketers Can Use Social Media to Improve Marketing." Some interesting points and some definitely we could incorporate in our libraries. I liked #9 - coupling our newsletter content with web content on a blog. I was also intrigued bysocial media press release he refers to in #12. You can check out the whole list at: http://www.chrisbrogan.com/50-ways-marketers-can-use-social-media-to-improve-their-marketing/.
Enjoy.

ALA Insightful Programs

After a busy and educational ALA conference I'm back at work and wanted to share some of the highlights from my conference experience. The best program I attended was "Selling Your Story: How to Use the PLA Service Responses to Market Your Library," presenters Sandra Nelson and June Garcia. The presentation was based on the newly revised PLA service responses - which by the way I found to be very connected to what we do in our libraries. They reflect the current planning environment for public libraries with an emphasis on strategic rather than long-term planning. Nelson and Garcia empahsized the need for proper planning, BEFORE we begin our marketing and promotion efforts. If you are interested in the powerpoint from this presentation it is posted at www.sandranelson.com/handouts/ala2008.htm. The service responses are introduced in the new book, Strategic Planning for Results. I will be ordering 2 copies of the book for the State Library collection so if you'd like to take a look at it feel free to request through interlibrary loan. The embedded link provides the ALA website where you can purchase the book for your own collection. http://www.alastore.ala.org./SiteSolution.taf?_sn=catalog2&_pn=product_detail&_op=2469
While in Anaheim I also visited the Cerritos Library - probably one of the neatest public libraries I've ever seen. Everything about this library focuses on the importance of the customer experience. The library offers themed spaces to define its different collections. The Old World Reading Room sports rare first editions, new and popular titles, wood paneling and a Gothic fireplace. A World Traditions area recognized the contributions of nonwestern culture and houses multimedia resources. The high tech, modern area features the newest technology and innovative spaces. And the children's area includes multimedia learning centers, centered around inviting reading spaces and various hands on features. Of course the best way for you to get the real picture is to check out the link that includes photos: http://www.ci.cerritos.ca.us/library/photos/library.html

BYFB in New Hanover County

A neat idea one that could entice new readers and encourage publicity.

By adding a new twist to the standard book club format, librarian Paige Owens encourages book lovers to gather for discussion of their favorites. BYFB, which stands for Bring Your Favorite Book, or your memory of it, began in November in the Northeast Regional Library in New Hanover County. The meetings focus on various themes - favorite mystery, favorite adult classic. Unlike the typical book club, where the group reads specific titles, BYFB participants talk about their personal preferences, books that have resonated with them.
I could see this also working with childrens and teens.

Books2eat

The International Edible Book Festival (the brainchild of a librarian) took place again this year with a whole catalog full of delicious, delightful fare. Held annually at various locations around the world in early April - primarily at libraries- it's a clever way to highlight libraries, books and good food. In Canada their edible book fair used the theme of The Wizard of Oz. Their promo: Follow the yellow brick road to the St. Mary’s University College Library where delectable creative works will be displayed and consumed. Whip up your own edible literary creation or simply come to marvel at the assortment of tasty and imaginative treats. Stay for a book reading, art book exhibition and a display of handmade fairytale books.

Start thinking now for next April. What a great way to involve local bakeries, chefs, etc.
Check out the website at http://www.books2eat.com. In the meantime I recently revisited an article that I find most interesting and wanted to share. The article, "What Libraries Can Learn from Bookstores", written by Chris Rippel, invites librarians to apply bookstore techniques to communicate with library customers. It's a great article and has tons of links - you could spend all day browsing. I especially like the section on "library smells". The Randolph County Public Library "Teen Corner" project addressed that need. The Teen Corner is the area of the Asheboro Public Library that houses the library's collection of books, magazines, and other materials for teens. Over the past year, the library embarked on a multifaceted strategy to draw teens into libraries countywide. Not only did they receive the Excellence in Library Service to Young Adult Award from YALSA, but they have seen a 61% increase in teens using the library.
